Early Sunday morning a shooting occurred in the City of Blakely that left one person dead and six others injured.
On Monday, FOX31 spoke with the city's Mayor and Chief of Police who said the shooting wasn't an isolated incident.
At a press conference held by the Blakely Police Department the city following Sunday's shooting, Chief Will Caudill said the city has seen a definite increase in violent acts committed by younger individuals.
Those violent acts include an uptick in shootings and shots fired.
Mayor Travis Wimbush added that there has been an unfortunate amount of shootings all throughout the city this year.
Mayor Wimbush believed the issue is younger individuals having access to guns when they shouldn't.
"They get into situations and instead of what we used to do is fight and leave it alone, instead of them fighting they're using the guns and reacting with guns versus fighting or what typically occurs," expressed Wimbush.
Following the recent shooting, Mayor Wimbush said they have increased their police presence the best they can, are looking to build relationships with the community to implement the necessary procedures to help law enforcement.
The Mayor went on to ask citizens of the community to come forward with information not just about the recent shooting, but others that are still being investigated as well.
FOX31 reached out to city council members to see their take on the increase in violent crime and how they're looking to combat it.
While we did not get a response, FOX31 will continue to reach out as this is an ongoing story.
