Sen. McConnell visits Elizabethtown; gives opinion on Supreme Court rulings
Sen. Mitch McConnell visited the commonwealth on Tuesday. He spoke at the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown's luncheon, giving his opinion on the recent Supreme Court rulings. McConnell said he believes the Supreme Court's job is to follow the Constitution as closely as possible, not interject their opinions. "You're not a very good judge if you're not occasionally unhappy with the outcome you reach, because it's not your personal opinion," said McConnell, "It's what seems to be required by the constitution and the laws."McConnell believes that's exactly what the high court did on Friday when they overturned the historic Roe v. Wade decision, giving the power back to the states when it comes to abortion. "The decision on abortion last week doesn't mean there won't be any abortions," said McConnell, "but what this decision did was take from the 9 lawyers' hands (Supreme Court) and put it back in the hands of the American people." As for his opinion on the Supreme Court's rulings on the right to bear arms and the freedom of religion, McConnell again agrees with the Court's close interpretation of the constitution. "What a remarkable decision. I think we clearly have a new Supreme Court," said McConnell. If the people are unhappy with the decisions being made, McConnell points out that they can make their voices heard at the ballot box. That's the benefit of these laws being passed back to the states, the decisions will be made by elected officials. This fall, the midterm elections will be a pulse check on how the country is feeling. McConnell adds it will be a time for the people to voice their opinions on issues like inflation, abortion, and the current state of the country. "So I think the number one issue going into the fall will be how do people feel about inflation, about crime, about open borders? How do they feel about this new, 100% Democratic government, Democratic president, House and Senate? I think this election is likely to be a report card on how we're doing," said McConnell. McConnell says regardless of what happens in the Senate races; whether the majority stays with the Democrats or swings to Republicans, he does not believe abortion will be federally banned.
