MILFORD — Police say a local teen suffered a broken shoulder Tuesday afternoon after the bicycle he was riding collided with a van.

The 17-year-old was taken to UMass-Memorial Medical Center in Worcester after the 5 p.m. crash, according to Deputy Police Chief Robert Tusino.

Initially, authorities believed the boy had a head injury, but that was not the case.

Police say the boy was riding his bicycle on Fountain Street, then crossed onto Purchase Street. A van that was traveling on Purchase Street struck the boy, according to police, adding that the driver remained at the scene.

Tusino did not release any information about the driver's identity. But the driver did not have a license and will be summoned to appear in Milford District Court

"Witnesses reported the juvenile was riding his pedal bicycle coming down the hill and he ignored the stop sign and rode right onto Purchase Street in front of the van," said Tusino.

Traffic was slowed at the intersection as the roads were temporarily closed. As of 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, travel on Purchase Street was restricted to one lane as investigators worked to reconstruct the crash.

No one has been cited as the crash remains "a very active" investigation.
