Casper Transit addresses community concerns

CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The City of Casper took over the transit system in 2021. Since then they have worked to provide services to meet the needs of Casper, Mills, Bar Nunn, and Evansville.

“We’re just trying to service the public because that’s what we’re here to do, is help people get from Point A to Point B and back home again,” said Casper Public Transit Manager Scott Dresher.

As gas prices continue to increase they are seeing more riders use the bus services. Door-to-door rides need to be scheduled about a week in advance, but the operation is generally running as intended.

“We’re not expecting to have to raise fares for either the LINK or the ASSIST busses at this time. We’re subject to the same costs as everyone else is, so we keep that as an option, but at this time we’re not planning on anything,” said Dresher.

Like other service industries, the transit system is having some difficulties with driver availability. They are working to train new drivers to provide steady coverage.

According to Dresher, Casper Area Transit has also faced challenges with maintaining fleet vehicles. He says most routine maintenance is still being completed within a week, but during the summer air conditioning is a priority, and supply chain issues have made getting replacement parts in a timely manner difficult.

Some transit users say that while they are thankful to have services, they wish there was more offered.

“It does good but then I think the bus needs to run a little earlier because for people that have to be to work before six o’clock in the morning, and there’s no bus and if they rely on the bus to get them there, they have to walk,” said Casper Transit user Carrie.

“It might be better if they run a few more buses. That way instead of having to wait every hour maybe every thirty minutes,” said Casper Transit user Shane.

Casper area transit says they welcome community input. To submit a complaint or compliment email transit@casperwy.gov, or directly email Dresher at sdresher@casperwy.gov.
