Cleanup Efforts of Homeless Encampments Underway North of Garberville

Cleanup efforts are underway in Bear Canyon just north of Garberville along Redwood Drive. CHP officers and Caltrans crews are at the scene. The houseless often use the steep terrain in the canyon that lies between Highway 101 and the South Fork of the Eel River to create campsites.

The sound of chainsaws echo from deep inside the steep canyon that is home to a creek that flows into the South Fork of the Eel River. There are two large refuse containers positioned at the top of Bear Canyon with signage from Katch Environmental, Inc. Workers are hauling trash and debris from the south side of the canyon up to the refuse containers.

Caltrans Public Information Officer for Humboldt and Del Norte counties, Myles Cochrane told us via email, “This week and next Caltrans crews will be cleaning up multiple encampments along U.S. 101 in the Garberville area of Humboldt County. The cleanup operations, in coordination with CHP and the County of Humboldt among others, will remedy unsafe and hazardous conditions.”

He said, “Advance notices of the cleanups were provided on-site as required, along with information regarding services for persons experiencing homelessness.”

As is the case with many encampments, trespassing, littering and fire issues have plagued the area where many seek refuge. Approximately six weeks ago, fire personnel responded to the area where a small vegetation fire was quickly extinguished. The site of that fire now has belongings secured under what appears to be a large tarp.

Local efforts through the Eel River Cleanup Project (ERCP) and other agencies have removed over a million pounds of trash located in waterways and homeless encampments in Southern Humboldt, yet the trash continues to accumulate, leading to tension among those that have differing views on how to deal with issues resulting from the encampments.

Across the canyon, a homeless man was organizing his encampment under the bridge. He told us that crews had not been on the north side of the canyon yet.

Why does prolific trash go along with homelessness almost every time. They like to camp, trash the place, leave the mess for others to clean up and then start over in a different location. If they would take care of themselves and their campsite they would not have the bad reputation they have.

They, like many other people have trouble paying for trash service. Hopefully cleanups like this will be done often this summer to prevent bumfires.

1) It’s more difficult to do a dump run without a vehicle or money.
2) the biggest roadside piles are from acre-grow-lazy-bros in big trucks who have their workers dump it at turnoffs a few miles from the dump.

The trash got there without a vehicle and roadside piles are not in homeless camps in the trees or under bridges. Two separate issues.

I liked your idea of keeping inmate firefighters and I think they should be paid according ly and given the chance to be a professional firefighter in the free world. But I disagree with your argument about affordable trash service. Ukiah just cleaned up that camp on Bush Street and they provided free trash service and that still didn’t work out. The place is trashed so badly that the area had to be fenced off due to safety hazards (trash, human waste, needles, rubbers, etc). The homeless that leave these camps need to be held accountable for cleaning that shit up. Even if the judges make jail guards take them out on a clean up crew.

When the democrats released all the low level custody inmates, they released our supply of inmates that qualify for the conservation camps. 90% of the inmate fire crews are history and their conservation camps closed. High Rock is the closest example.

I used to do clean up at Reggae. Most poop buckets were left in Volunteer Camping. Condoms under parked semi trailers along Bob Marley…needles still hanging in their arm as they fall out of the porty potty!

Alf, it would go a long way if they would clean up the messes that they leave before going to a new spot. I think the basic problem for many is drugs and lost hope. They just continue to slide into a deeper mess both physically and mentally. They don’t really have a place to turn for help if they want it, so they get their monthly government check, buy a few bites of food and drugs and continue on with their lifestyle. I feel very sorry for them, and I am glad my life turned out ok. If asked for spare change or some food I give them what I can spare. They usually have a family somewhere, but they have lost touch, or the family does not want anything to do with them. It is a big problem, and it is very sad. I only wish that I had the magic answer.

So here is what is being done… the “houseless” are required to be notified in advance of cleanups, and of services that are offered. Pretty much what we are saying is, it’s fine with us if you leave your shit and refuse all over the place. Go ahead and create fire hazards and pollute waterways. It’s not only okay with us that you fuck up everything you come in contact with, we will do our best to provide you with new locations and a bunch of services and benefits to reward you for your irresponsible and often criminal behavior. You are not accountable for your actions, and we promise to create new laws to protect your way of life.

My reasonable and well-thought-out plan most certainly involves accountability and work performed in order to receive any type of benefit or service. If, for example, I can be fined for littering, there must be consequences for individuals who create these disgusting encampments.
But I will tell you this, Pepperwood… it is not incumbent upon me to devise a reasonable and well-thought-out plan in order to see the obvious failure brought about by the treatment these people receive. I am not being paid a big salary to devise solutions, but I am very well-qualified to recognize something that is not working.
And because I do not have a solution at hand does NOT make me part of the problem, as I am guessing you are eager to explain to me. On the contrary, I am a taxpayer, and I am continually looked upon to fund poorly planned solutions. And I vote, which also makes me part of the solution.

we’re taxpayers here. If I had a point it would be, it’s easy to bitch and to put things out of context. If you’re going to bitch, good god man, offer a solution. If not, then you are the problem by kicking the proverbial can.

Very first sentence. Perhaps you overlooked it in your haste to lecture me on the so-predictable solution/problem response…
My reasonable and well-thought-out plan most certainly involves accountability and work performed in order to receive any type of benefit or service.”
As it currently stands, I see little if no accountability, and show me one of these bums who works in exchange for everything handed to them.
And did you miss that I clearly stated, “I am not being paid a big salary to devise solutions“.
Tell you what, Pepperwood. I’ve given you all the replies I believe you deserve.

My solution: return to what worked- institutions for have severe mental issues. Stronger more effective laws and jail time for people who are criminals. What we have been trying hasn’t worked. Nice try liberal left, to give everyone a chance to be better people. But the fact is, people are not their best when left to themselves.

You haters just kill me. Homelessness is not going away and will probably get worse. It would seem logical to provide dumpsters and portapotties. If given a feaseable route to keep the garbage under control I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want to keep their camp clean. Give cooperation and some humanity a try. And if that fails you can hit me up with I told ya so. And maybe encourage the homeless community to “police” themselves peer pressure.

The solution is to vote republican across the board in the 2022 and 2024 elections. They will enforce our laws, incarcerate criminals and take our streets back. It’s a matter of political will and the democrats have proven for the last 5 decades that they have no will or desire to improve your life, in California.

Have you any proof that republicans cheat, steal and lie because that’s the democrats territory… As I posted, IF you want change vote republican across the board or expect to receive more of the same. How will politicians enforce any law? They write them. Law Enforcement is a descriptive term used for the agencies who…enforce the law. Back the Blue, right?
To make your point you’ve selectively forgot Arnold Shwarztenegger, Pete Wilson, George Deukmajian, and even Ronald Reagan over the last 50 years.

Country Joe

I didn’t forget them but only have so much time to post. If you want laws enforced, our streets taken back and laws enforced vote republican across the board. Law enforcement can’t do their job because democrat politicians have tied their hands behind their backs. We must have a republican Governor and Assembly ready to enforce laws to take our streets back. And yes, I always back the Blue.

The solution is to not permit homeless to camp by trespassing.
If they do do so, escort them to a homeless camp (requires creating homeless camp😁) with basic shelter plus community bathrooms and kitchen.
Make them help maintain homeless camp.

Is Michelle Bushnell EVER going to clean up her property just north of redway on the way to the dump? Her property is FULL of meth freaks . When they are at their camps , they’re cookin drugs , starting fires .Every night these meth addicts come out into our town and neighborhoods to deal drugs, rip people off , go crazy on, get violent. Bushnell has not done one damn thing to keep our community safe, if she cared , the LEAST she could do is CLEAN UP HER OWN PROPERTY, but NO , she lets it all run rampant, putting our whole community at risk. She has been letting this go on for years and our town is tired of it.

My plan is this: when the bay is dredged, sand islands are made in the bay. Maybe 40 to 50 people per island. Small trees and grasses could grow there and footbridges would connect them. The harbor fire boat would be available for fires. A garbage scow could pick up trash. The strolling poor could make trinkets of the trash and sell them to the touristas on the madaket. Betty chin could trade her blue angel for a blue angler and bring sandwiches for all! I have more ideas…. here…hold my beer.

Farm/work camps in the Central Valley. Illegal campers and squatters get a citation and a free ride to the camp. Plenty of State and Federal land out near Fresno and Bakersfield to set it up. Provide humane subsistence-level services, and the opportunity to earn more via onsite programs through public-private partnerships.

Already have those farm/work camps nationwide. They are called PRISONS where the inmates are forced to slave for private corporations. They get humane subsistence-level services too. Plus the opportunity to earn early release into the public-private partnership called PAROLE.
Pay attention more its already a done deal.

Yes that’s part of it but not all are poor little weed growers. Most have violence in their jackets. We went through this back in 1987, so CDC changed their classification process to allow higher level custody inmates out to conservation camps, to fill the positions.

Well, we don’t currently have a spot where these folks can live, and people are not ghosts yet, so they’re regularly forced to endure “cleanups” where they are told to move on down the road. With the giant sucking lack of any real social support and so many good Christians doing nothing, I’d have a hard time drumming up any sympathy inside me for the cares of the housed and employed as well.

This is a glaring example of how the Democrats running Kalifornistan care so much about the environment and their constituents.

The environment and the streets in cities and towns across the state are trashed and crumbling. State and federal lands are untended and overgrown providing prime wildfire conditions. The proletariat are milked dry of any and all earnings from overtaxation until they give up and turn to drugs for an escape, but then are no longer useful to the bourgeoisie.

A cursory cleansing and “move along folks” is all you’ll see in these human waste enclaves. In the meantime, businesses and farms that can provide “fines” or “compensation” are charged for the same type of cleanup after sharing their earnings, although anyone that owns property should not let it turn into a dump.

In Kalifornistan, state-sanctioned gulags are the answer for these dregs that can no longer donate to the bourgeoisie. Or perhaps a money making series can be made so the upper proletariat and bourgeoisie can be entertained by live streaming “The Purge” or the “Hunger Games” as the violent end of lower class proletariats becomes coveted advertising time.

Probably used as a cover up for stealing our resources and water, as cheap as possible (without any regards to anything else besides $). THESE BUSINESS ENTITIES will stop, and our state agencies need to learn that if the motive is $, it’s not going to work. Whatever project, whatever person, stop. Cease and desist. CHP…when did you all stop working as peace officers and started working for business law enforcement. We don’t need you for that task. Cities…..ci or whatever, #1 priority = safe, healthy and caring residents. Y’all city councils need to live in the the city y’all represent. Furthermore, if you are in it for the $ , you’re fired. You wont be elected, it won’t be fun and if you own a business in that city, don’t take moonlight gig as a city worker, you have your own business. People are taking, taking , taking, what’s not even there’s to take, or anyone else’s to take. PEOPLE WHO DO THIS AND/OR HAVE OTHER ENITITIES DO THIS FOR YOU AND ONLY YOU…..STOP. WE SEE YOU. THE TREES SEE YOU. THE WATER SEE YOU. THE ROCK SEE YOU. YOU THINK ’64FLOODS AND ’06 FIRES OR COMET HITTING Serbia, or Famine just happens? Snap of a finger? Like hay in a bottoms shed wrapped by workers trying to make $, Arcats Fire District, stop what you are doing. Answer your phones. AFD is not a business. Is so, stay away from our water system. Quit conspiring and with HBFP. You are not a business. You are a fire fighting service of Humboldt County. These guys at the top need term limits for a number of reasons, the most important being TEACHING OF PEOPLE TO DO THAT TASK CORRECTLY, not with making the most money. what if I told you that it was all funded , pre funded. EVERYTHING. PREFunded. WE WOULD MAKE SURE TO GET IT RIGHT, WE WOULDNT NEED MONEY OR WANT IT.

If you were to put on Judas coin purse, you would know that the story goes that you sold Jesus for 25 pieces of silver. Which are represented in the Portuguese flag. It’s a symbol, don’t sell water, don’t take water, some octopus on its death bed needs that water to communicate to humans how to keep there species alive, and their kids and next generation with the ability to not be a lemming or an octopus..
