Now open, Demopolis City Landing can accommodate increased everyday boat traffic as well as most local and regional fishing tournaments.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (ADCNR) Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) and the City of Demopolis announces that renovations to the Demopolis City Landing have been completed and the facility is now open for public use. The facility is located on the Tombigbee River in Demopolis, Alabama.

The newly renovated landing features a four-lane launching slab, a 240-foot access pier and paved parking for 58 vehicles with trailers. Several acres of green space are also available for overflow parking. The facility closed for construction in the fall of 2021. Now open, Demopolis City Landing can accommodate increased everyday boat traffic as well as most local and regional fishing tournaments.

“This is a great project for Demopolis, Marengo County and all of west Alabama,” said Chris Blankenship, ADCNR Commissioner. “There are great fishery resources in this area. Now we have a facility that can host large tournaments and will attract people to this special part of the state. The cooperation between ADCNR, the City of Demopolis, Marengo County and other organizations is a model for how different levels of government and businesses can partner to do good work for our citizens.”

In partnership since 2018, ADCNR and the City of Demopolis have worked to expand the launching facility to meet a growing demand for boating and fishing access on the Tombigbee and Black Warrior rivers. In addition to expanding and modernizing the landing, renovations were needed to address chronic siltation issues affecting the boat ramp. The City of Demopolis will handle maintenance and grounds keeping at the facility.

Funding for the project was primarily provided by ADCNR, the City of Demopolis and Marengo County.

“After being in the works for nearly a year, we are proud to announce the reopening of the city’s new landing facility,” said Demopolis Mayor Woody Collins. “With the primary assistance coming from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the City of Demopolis was also able to enlist assistance from six additional public agencies to fund the project and make it a reality. With additional projects coming soon, we invite everyone to visit Demopolis and take a look at our newest recreational facilities.”

A tournament weigh-in facility is also planned for Demopolis City Landing. The weigh-in project is a collaborative effort of ADCNR, the City of Demopolis, Alabama Power Company and B.A.S.S. The weigh-in facility will include an open-air pavilion and a large concrete slab for tournament weigh-in trailers. The construction will not impact public use of the landing.

WFF has a 20-year sublease for Demopolis City Landing with the City of Demopolis to provide boating access to the public. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the property owner.
