The Enid Police Department says someone is posting fake emergencies to Facebook, and it is causing confusion for residents.
Police say an unknown Facebook user is claiming people are being held hostage or targeted to kill.
Enid police say these posts are not true.
Enid police say someone by the screen name Tariro Tary Masaire posted a violent and threatening message on several Enid community Facebook groups.
"We know that the crimes did not occur because they weren’t reported to us and we didn’t respond to any of these calls," Enid police spokesperson Cass Rains said.
Police say there are copycats across the country too.
"They were claiming that they were assaulted, stabbed, shot or murdered while out and about in the community," Rains said.
Officers say these Facebook posts have neighbors worried.
Officers say they aren't sure who is spreading this false information.
"Oftentimes, these perpetrators are well outside our jurisdiction or country," Rains said. "They are difficult, if not impossible to prosecute."
Enid PD says it will never use a third party to relate sensitive information.
If you are in danger, police always say call 911 first.
