Police investigate holdup at downtown credit union
Suspect arrested at nearby hotel
Wichita Falls Police investigated a robbery at the Union Square Credit Union at 14th and Holliday streets Tuesday afternoon.
The notification to police came in as a panic alarm at 3:17 p.m. When officers arrived they learned a man had entered the building and handed an employee a note demanding money. He fled the building with an undetermined amount of cash. It was not immediately know if the suspect was armed.
Police searched the area and at about 4:15 p.m., took a suspect into custody at the Delux Inn about one block away. His identity was not immediately released.
Surveillance video of the suspect was circulated to police. He was identified as 56-year-old Melvis Compton. Hughes said Compton was in possession of the money taken in the robbery and wearing the same clothing seen in the robbery video.
Compton gave a full confession during an interview at the Police Department. A robbery warrant was obtained. He was also charged for Possession of Controlled Substance. The FBI assisted in the investigation. No one was injured in the incident.

According to a previous Times Record News report, WFPD responded to a bank robbery in November 2021 at Fort Sill National Bank on Kemp Boulevard. A woman was injured during that incident. The robber fled the scene with an undetermined amount of stolen money.
