After heavy rains flooded the area last month, Governor Gretchen Whitmer officially declared a state of emergency Tuesday in Mecosta County.
City officials say, the flooding in Big Rapids on May 11th is the worst it’s been in over three decades, as the rain caused widespread heavy damage throughout Mecosta County.
On Tuesday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer released this statement along with the disaster declaration which said in part quote,
“This state of emergency declaration will ensure that Michiganders in Big Rapids receive the resources and support they need to recover and rebuild following severe weather and flooding…Tough times call for tough people and Michiganders have been through a lot together.”
According to the governor’s office, the declaration makes all state resources available in cooperation with local response including authorizing the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division.
