Ryan Gosling Wore a Shirt of Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor to the “Barbie” Set

And we love to see it.

Ryan Gosling has once again been spotted out and about rocking his newly blonde Ken hair, but, this time around, it’s not the striking 'do that’s catching our attention. Rather, it's his choice of shirt.

Recently, the actor stepped out wearing a black tee printed with a fan-made design of Doctor Who’s latest Time Lord, Ncuti Gatwa, who is also his co-star in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which is currently filming. (ICYMI: Ncuti was announced to be taking over the controls of the TARDIS from incumbent Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, on Sunday, May 8, becoming the first Black actor to play the lead role full-time, following Jo Martin’s recurring run as the Fugitive Doctor.)

Taking to Instagram, Ncuti posted a story of Ryan opening his denim jacket to show off the design. “Dolls supporting Doctors,” he wrote. “Yass King. As if I couldn’t love him any more.”

Graphic designer and Doctor Who fan Matthew Purchase designed the artwork that was printed on Ryan’s shirt. Ncuti added another slide crediting the artist behind the design. Purchase used a shot of Ncuti wearing a yellow blazer and golden jewelry, photographed by Robert Wilson, and placed it in front of a swirling prism vortex — complete with his watermark. Now, Matthew’s Twitter bio reads: “My name once worn on Ryan Gosling’s chest.”

Inbound showrunner Russell T Davies posted a photo of Ryan in the shirt, joking that he’s technically wearing illicit merch. “This is, genuinely, Ryan Gosling wearing a t-shirt of Ncuti Gatwa as Doctor Who,” Russell wrote. “We’re suing him, of course. Illegal merch.”

Legal jokes aside, Ryan is no stranger to the world of Doctor Who, having been enthralled by Matt Smith’s performance as the Eleventh Doctor. “Doctor Who was on TV and he was doing a scene where he had a microphone and he was literally ruling the universe telling these spaceships how it was going to be,” Ryan told Digital Spy in 2015.

Ncuti’s Barbie co-star Simu Liu revealed that the film’s cast found out about the Doctor Who casting at the same time as the rest of the world, arriving to work on the following Monday to realize Ncuti had kept it secret for two months. Barbie, which stars Margot Robbie in the titular role, as well as America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, and Issa Rae, is set for release in July 2023.
