Former first lady Melania Trump shot down a tweet proposal from her chief of staff Stephanie Grisham that would have condemned violence as the Capitol riot unfolded.

Trump rejected the tweet idea with a single word, according to a screenshot of a text exchange between the two Grisham shared following the House select Jan. 6 committee hearing Tuesday.

“Do you want to tweet that peaceful protests are the right of every American, but there is no place for lawlessness & violence?” a text from Grisham said.

“No,” a person identified as “MT” replied.

Grisham confirmed to the Washington Examiner that the text message was with Melania Trump.

“I resigned immediately after her response,” Grisham, who resigned from the administration on Jan. 6, 2021, the day of the riot, told the Washington Examiner.

She recalled the text exchange with the former first lady in her book, I’ll Take Your Questions Now: What I Saw in The Trump White House, last year. A spokesperson for Melania Trump shot back at Grisham in response to the revelation at the time.

“The intent behind this book is obvious. It is an attempt to redeem herself after a poor performance as press secretary, failed personal relationships, and unprofessional behavior in the White House. Through mistruth and betrayal, she seeks to gain relevance and money at the expense of Mrs. Trump,” the spokesperson said last September.

During the bombshell, hastily scheduled sixth public hearing, Trump administration officials, including Cassidy Hutchinson, then assistant to then-chief of staff Mark Meadows, recalled former President Donald Trump’s response to the riot, particularly his reticence to condemn violence at the Capitol.

Staffers encouraged him to include language in a speech calling for prosecutions against the rioters. Trump rejected that and mulled declaring he would issue pardons for rioters, according to Hutchinson. He was reluctant to deliver the speech altogether but ultimately stripped language about prosecution from the speech.
