The Humboldt County Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team (EOD) was called into a Cutten neighborhood Monday night to check on a suspicious device that turned out to be a large illegal firework.
According to the HCSO, some called police to report a suspicious device discovered alongside a road on the 2100 block of Arbutus Street in the Eureka neighborhood of Cutten.
The EOD team responded to the scene and nearby residents were asked to stay indoors while they investigated. Ultimately, the HCSO said the item was determined to be a "large modified illegal firework". It was taken to a secure area and rendered safe.
Sheriff's officials are reminding the public that only "Safe and Sane" fireworks are legal to use in California. Due to the rise in reports of illegal fireworks in the community, local public safety agencies are urging people to report users of illegal fireworks but to avoid calling 9-1-1.
"If you see something suspicious or out of place in your neighborhood, do not touch or move it, but contact your local law enforcement," the HCSO said in a press release. "To report the use or possession of illegal fireworks, please use the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Non-Emergency Line at 707-445-7251. Only utilize 9-1-1 to report fire, injuries or other emergencies."
