Man charged with stabbing 23-year-old, another arrested after threatening witness with machete

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Two men were arrested following a stabbing on Syracuse’s South Side Tuesday morning, police said.

Around 10:36 a.m., police responded to reports of a stabbing on West Ostrander Avenue, according to a news release from Syracuse police.

Police found a 23-year-old man with a stab wound to the midsection, police said. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital and is expected to survive, they said.

The stabbing occurred during a fight between the victim and Devalle Savery, 35, of Syracuse, police said. Savery is accused of stabbing the victim, they said.

Savery is charged with second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

During the fight, a witness tried to break up the two men, Syracuse police spokesperson Lt. Matthew Malinowski said.

Another man, Steven Bryant, displayed a machete and threatened the witnesses who was attempting to break up the fight, Malinowski said.

Bryant, 45, was charged with disorderly conduct, police said. Bryant was also taken to the Onondaga County Justice Center for outstanding warrants, they said.

Just over an hour later on Syracuse’s West Side, a woman in her 20s was stabbed on the 500 block of Richmond Avenue, police said. The stabbings appear to be unrelated.

The woman was taken to Upstate University Hospital where she is expected to survive, police said.
