Due to successful fire extinguishing efforts, the Black Fire is now managed by a local Type 3 team led by incident commander, Joe Sampson. The Black Fire’s phone number and email address is no longer active. For future updates, contact the Gila National Forest at 575-388-8201 or the local Public Information Officer, Larry.smith@usda.gov. The Black Fire emergency closure on National Forest System lands around the Black Fire area remains in effect. Route 152 is open from mile marker 40 (Kingston) to mile marker 15 (San Lorenzo). Visitors are requested to continue to practice caution in the area and be aware of increased fire traffic. The Gila National Forest has lifted all fire restrictions, but visitors must remember that fireworks are NEVER permitted on National Forests.

A project of the New Mexico Department of Health has been named a finalist for the Association Excellence Awards. The project, titled “Smoke Free at Home New Mexico” is a collaborative effort between the Nicotine Use Prevention and Control program and the Apartment Association of New Mexico that works to reduce the harm of secondhand smoke in multi-unit housing statewide. This project is a finalist in the “Setting the Standard” category for the awards ceremony sponsored by the New Mexico Society of Association Executives. In addition, Smoke Free at Home New Mexico has certified 227 apartment complexes and affordable or public housing locations as being smoke free, which includes 18,305 individual units.

Grant County, in cooperation with Freeport McMoRan, is hosting a Public Hearing at 5:00 P.M. tomorrow evening, June 29th, in the Grant County Commission Meeting Room. The topic of discussion will be the Tyrone Thompson Road re-route being proposed by Freeport McMoRan. The re-route is part of the mine’s Emma Expansion project and will help prevent traffic delays from mining activity.
