FENTON, Mich. - The Fenton Fire Department battled a blaze downtown.
"it's quite a big staple here in Fenton city. All of my friends, family we love their food and their drinks and the speakeasy has always been a lot of fun," Erica Bond, a Fenton resident said.
According to Fenton Fire Chief Robert Carinduff, the fire that destroyed the El Topo restaurant most likely started from an employees car parked out back. He tells Mid-Michigan NOW that fire spread to the nearby tree and then across the parking lot, destroying a barn that belonged to a separate business.
Chief Carniduff says that car fire is also responsible for the fire at El Topo's.
No one was hurt in the fire.
"No injuries. He had a couple of firefighters checked for heat exhaustion today just because of the temps and being a little short handed when we first got here, but other than that everyone's okay," Chief Carniduff said.
In total, four buildings were damaged during the fire.
The Edward jones investments building located right next door to El Topo's, received some damaging on the side of their business.
The barn located in the back of El Topo's belonging to a dentist office was destroyed by the fire, and burned to the ground.
Chief Carinduff says the El Topo restaurant and the Relief & Resource Co. Speakeasy will need to be rebuilt.
Both businesses, were located inside the same building.
"Just super sad. I was in shock after what happened in Holly, just devastating there. So to hear it happened in our own community really hit home," Bond said.
"It's sad. I'm glad no one was hurt. So that's the biggest thing and I feel they have been really good to the community I hope that they can just rebuild as fast as possible," Nikki, another Fenton community member said.
