Ora Joan Turner

June 28, 2022

On the tenth day of October in the year of our Lord 1933, Lester McGuire and his wife, Edna (Decker) McGuire welcomed their only daughter to their home. She was welcomed by one older brother, Forest Lee. The new born lady was named Ora Joan McGuire (Ora, after an aunt) but she was soon to be called Joan or just Jo by her friends and relatives. Joan grew up in Dade County, Missouri and her early school years were spent at the Arcola school in Arcola, Missouri. That school was closed in 1950 and Joan finished her high school education in Lockwood, Missouri being a member of the Lockwood graduating class of 1951.

Shortly after graduation, Joan married Donald Davis in Chandler, Arizona as he was stationed there with the United States Air Force. Two children were born of this marriage, Patricia Ann and James Melvin Davis. Joan’s marriage to Donald Davis ended in divorce in 1970.

Joan decided to return to school and attended LPN school in Nevada, Missouri. After attaining her LPN license, Joan moved to Lamar, Missouri, and began a career of over 30 years in nursing. She spent 20 of those years at the Barton County Memorial Hospital until her retirement.

During her nursing years, her devotion to her brother, who was wounded and paralyzed in Korea, was evident to all by her twice weekly trips from Lamar to Greenfield, Missouri to care for his needs.

In 1988, Joan married David Turner and they made their home in Lamar. They attended the United Methodist Church in Lamar until March of 2020, when Joan suffered a large stroke and spent the next two years at Lake Stockton Nursing Facility in Stockton, Missouri, and near her daughter, Patty. Joan left this world on Saturday, June 18, 2022 for a different home in Heaven. Her daughter, Patty was at her side.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her only brother, Forest McGuire, and one grandson, Jerome Burns.

She is survived by her husband, David; her daughter Patty (Ralph) Burns; her son, James (Teresa) Davis; three grandsons: Jason (Kelli) Burns, Joshua Davis, Scott (Tanya) Burns; two granddaughters: Jami (Rick) Rivera, Joni (Andy) Caddell; four great-granddaughters: Sadie (Raymond) Ferguson, Kaitlyn Johnmeyer, Juliana Rivera, McKenna Caddell; four great-grandsons: Zach Burns, Nick Burns, Kaden Burns, Lucas Rivera. Joan will be missed by many cousins and friends.
