Suspicious individual in parking lot

A suspicious individual was reported looking under and into vehicles in the parking lot of The Center for Family Research on June 22 at 9:12 a.m., according to a report from the University of Georgia Police Department.

An officer received a description of the individual, reported to be a male. Upon arriving at the scene at 9:17 a.m., they did not see the individual, according to the report. After speaking with another individual on if they had seen someone who matched the description, the witness said they had and that the individual had exited the parking lot and walked down the road.

Officers searched for the suspicious individual in surrounding areas but could not locate the man. The report said an officer contacted the UGA employee who had reported the incident and the employee stated the man did not enter any vehicles, only looking under and into them.

After speaking with others who had seen the man, the officer attained a more detailed description and was able to determine the man was not an employee of the building and did not own any of the vehicles he looked into, according to the report.

Officers were unable to locate the man and provided a case number to two UGA employees who had seen the man.

Exit signs damaged in Rooker Hall

Two exit signs were damaged in Rooker Hall and officers were dispatched to the scene on June 21 at 8:25 p.m., according to a UGAPD report.

Officers arrived at 8:33 p.m. and met with two UGA employees, who reported that an unknown individual damaged two exit signs located next to the first floor elevators in Rooker Hall. The signs were tilted out of place but still attached to the ceiling, the report said.

The employees were unable to give a timeframe for the incident and the total damage is estimated to be less than $500.

Fire in apartment stove

On June 19 at 7:24 p.m., officers were dispatched to the University Village apartments, where a possible electrical fire was reported, according to a UGAPD report.

The UGA student who had reported the fire said as he was making oatmeal with his roommate at 7:10 p.m. when they noticed sparks coming from the port where the electric coil of the burner plugged into the stovetop and then saw smoke from the openings of all four burners, according to the report.

When officers arrived on scene at 7:28 p.m., the students stated they turned off the stove and poured water on it while it continued to smoke but the water appeared to do nothing so they used the apartment fire extinguisher, which seemed to be effective at extinguishing the smoke, the report said. Neither student was injured and no personal property was damaged.

Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services arrived at 7:31 p.m. and after turning off the breaker for the stove, cleared the area for reentry, according to the report.

The officer requested UGA Housing maintenance be notified of the incident and the discharged fire extinguisher. A UGA employee of the UGA Environmental Safety Division was notified of the incident and contacted a fire marshal, who determined there was no structural damage, the report said.
