The Detroit Pistons have tendered a $7.2 million qualifying offer to Marvin Bagley III. Bagley will be a restricted free agent on July 1.

This move is considered to be procedural. The Pistons have the ability to create a league-high $40 million or more in cap space this offseason. It's expected that Detroit and Bagley will quickly reach an agreement on his next contract. That will allow the Pistons to renounce Bagley's sizable cap hold to use cap space for other moves, while retaining enough space to sign Bagley later in the offseason.

Bagley played well after being acquired by Detroit from the Sacramento Kings at the trade deadline. The 23-year-old big man averaged 14.6 points on 55.5% shooting to along with 6.8 rebounds in 27.2 minutes per game with the Pistons.
