Watch the video above to see the officer's wrecked motorcycle and more.Authorities said the suspect, 20-year-old Tyriq McCall of Brighton, was a passenger in a car being driven by a 21-year-old Birmingham woman, Demaria Hicks. Police said the pair were pulled over for a traffic violation on Lakeshore Parkway when the officer discovered McCall was wanted on a murder warrant in Jefferson County. While the officer was waiting for backup to arrive, police said Hicks drove away and an interstate chase ensued. As the pursuit continued westbound on I-59, police said the suspect's car suddenly went from the far left lane to the 19th Street North exit ramp in Bessemer, causing the motor scout officer to crash into another officer's patrol SUV. "This reckless maneuver forced civilian vehicles and Homewood Police vehicles to take evasive action and resulted in a Homewood Police Motorcycle Officer, who was operating his motorcycle in a support role, collide with another Homewood Police Vehicle," Homewood PD Staff Sergeant John Carr said. The motor scout was critically injured and airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he is in now in stable condition. The officer's injuries are not life-threatening. Police said the officer hasn't been with the Homewood Police Department very long but is a 20-year veteran in law enforcement. After the suspects got off the interstate, police said McCall got out of the car carrying a handgun and a rifle and began fleeing on foot. Hicks sped away after McCall exited the car."Officers with the Hueytown Police Department, Bessemer Police Department, and Deputy’s with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department along with Homewood officers set a perimeter and began a search for McCall," Carr said. "McCall was located in the 1700 block of 18th Way North and after a brief foot pursuit was taken into custody."Carr said arresting officers found McCall in possession of a stolen Glock handgun and the rifle. Another handgun that McCall allegedly tossed out of the car during the chase was also recovered. At 12:13 p.m., Carr said detectives found Hicks at a home in the 700 block of Old Springville Road and took her into custody. She is currently being held in the Homewood City Jail pending further investigation."We would like to express our deepest thanks to the medical professionals at UAB for the care and support that was and continues to be provided to our fellow officer," Carr said.Get the WVTM 13 app for the latest updates on this developing story.
