Dozens arrested in multi-agency drug sweep in Brockton, Massachusetts
Dozens of people were arrested Tuesday morning in a massive drug sweep in Brockton, Massachusetts, state and local officials said. Investigators said the multi-agency operation was at least two months in the making and targeted drug dealers who were selling and trafficking opioids, including fentanyl in Brockton."This morning, thus far, 13 arrest teams have made 34 arrests, all without incident. Two illegally possessed firearms have also been seized this morning," said Massachusetts State Police Col. Christopher Mason.Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said drug dealers and traffickers are "crumbling our communities" with violent crime and drug overdoses. "Drug dealers, and traffickers, and the associated violence that goes along with it, are crumbling our communities and negatively affecting the quality of life here in the city of Brockton, and here in the county of Plymouth, and here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," Cruz said. Fatal drug overdoses in Plymouth County are down 15 percent year-to-date, according to the Cruz, but last year was a record high for fatal overdoses across the state at nearly 2,300. "We're placing undercover officers out into the streets, they're often entering into these open-air drug markets, they're making cold contact with people that they don't know, that don't know them. So those can be very volatile, dynamic situations," Mason said. Investigators said the arrests were intended to interrupt the flow of narcotics, and send a warning to people who deal and distribute drugs. "We're not targeting users – street-level users – what we're looking to do is work our way up, identify the drug trafficking organizations and start to dismantle and disrupt their efforts, and start to deny them the profits,” Mason said. The defendants were arraigned Tuesday in Brockton District Court. The man facing the illegal firearms charges had bail set at $10,000 on those charges. In some of the drug cases, the defendants were held without bail pending dangerousness hearings.
