West Virginia war hero Hershel "Woody" Williams is in the hospital, his foundation announced Tuesday.
The 98-year-old is the last living Medal of Honor recipient from World War II. The Woody Williams Foundation asked for privacy for the family in a statement.
“We certainly appreciate all of those who have reached out with well wishes and all who have been sharing prayers for Woody’s healing and comfort,” the Woody Williams Foundation said in a statement. “At this time, Woody is not accepting visitors and his family appreciates everyone respecting his privacy. As he lives out his last days, we welcome and appreciate any additional prayers lifted up on behalf of Woody and his family.”
Williams was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Under heavy machine gun fire, he used a flamethrower and set explosives to wipe out seven pillboxes.
Over the years, he has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In March 2021, a U.S. Navy ship, USS Hershel “Woody” Williams, was commissioned and named in his honor.
