Riverhead Police have arrested a Center Moriches man for allegedly striking a man with a car and fleeing the scene at the River Pointe Apartments complex on East Main Street last week.

Police said Brandon Smith, 38, was the operator of a vehicle that struck another man during an altercation last Wednesday, causing injury to the victim that required treatment at Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Police said they received a call reporting a disturbance at the apartment complex at approximately 7:18 p.m. on June 22. Police responded to the scene but could not locate the vehicle. The police located the victim of the incident, who said he was in an altercation with Smith when he was struck.

Smith was arrested this morning and charged with Assault in the Second Degree, Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree and multiple vehicle and traffic violations, including leaving the scene of an accident with an injury. Smith was processed and held for arraignment in Riverhead Justice Court today.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
