Voter registration drive

A voter registration drive will be held Saturday, July 2, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at St. John Temple Church of God in Christ, located at 1104 N. Roosevelt St. in Bogalusa. This drive is sponsored by the Community Action Organization. There will be hot dogs served, for those who register. For further information, call Joel Miller at 985-516-8655.

Bogalusa fireworks show

The city of Bogalusa will hold its fireworks show at dusk on Monday, July 4.

Fireworks in Franklinton

The Fourth of July fireworks show in Franklinton will be held at 9 p.m. at the Washington Parish Fairgrounds on Monday, July 4.

Redmond Heights/Oakhill reunion

It’s time for a Redmond Heights Housing Projects and Oakhill Housing Projects Reunion. (Canceled in 2016 due to Mrs. Sampson’s medical condition) A time to gather nieces, nephews, grandparents and all members of a family. A time where everyone sees each other to catch up on what’s happened since you’ve visited last. Mark your calendar for Sunday, July 10, for the next meeting, at 4:30 p.m. at Poplas Quarters Recreational Center, located at 1-JJ Piper Drive in Bogalusa (Next to the Coach Mike Harrington Baseball Field) For former residents of Redmond Heights Projects during the 50s, 60s and 70s, contact Glady “Cookie” Robinson Lampton at 985-732-5745 and for former residents of Oak Hill Projects during the 50s, 60s and 70s, contact Ann Washington Sampson at 985-516-5817. They are looking forward to hearing from all of you.

Memorial scholarship

The Riggins/Sampson Memorial Scholarship Award was started to honor the life and legacy of the late McClurie Sampson of Bogalusa, the late David Riggins of Vinton, and all past presidents and members of the Louisiana Municipal Black Caucus Association. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist first- and second-year undergraduate students across the state defray some of the cost of tuition for college and/or community college. Scholarship awardees are also asked to participate in public engagement events with local leaders. All applications must be electronically submitted to wilkatgda@gmail.com by midnight on or before Monday, July 25. Requirements are as follows: Eligible applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.50. Applicants must be a first- or second-year undergraduate student in good standing. If an applicant is a first-year student, a letter of acceptance must be attached to the application from the school of his or her choice. The institution of higher learning must be in Louisiana. Applicants must submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words on a current event topic within their respective community, and further express in writing what steps they will take to improve their community upon completion of college. All applications must list the name of the LMBC-LEO Mayor or Council member that recommended them. Member/municipalities must be in good standing with LMBC-LEO, and only one submission is allowed per municipality/organization. Each submission subject line should read “2022-23 Riggins/Sampson Memorial Scholarship” and also include the applicant’s name, address, phone number, email address, and a copy of the institution of higher learning’s acceptance letter.

Baby Let’s Cruise

The Bogalusa Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission will present “Baby Let’s Cruise” on Friday, Aug. 5. Cruise town like you’re a teenager again. Bring your teens along. Stop by the old fountain for food, karaoke and open mic fun. Dress your decade. Stop for some selfies. Don’t forget your Sonic cup. Stay tuned for more information about this fun planned event.

Fair poster contest

The Washington Parish Fair Association invites Washington Parish artists to participate in the 2022 Fair Poster Contest. The entry deadline is Friday, July 29. Rules for poster entry are as follows: Entrants must be Washington Parish residents (or native college students) and at least 18 years old. The design should be 16 by 20 inches and not exceed 18 by 24 inches (portrait/vertical) on mat board, illustration board, canvas or heavy paper. Format is up to the artist. The poster design may contain “Washington Parish Fair 2022,” or the printer can add appropriate lettering digitally. Include a small sketch to indicate letter design and placement. The design may pertain to the Fair in general or to a specific part of the Fair. It must be non-commercial (not used for any other purposes such as T-shirts, cups, etc.). If an identifiable person is used, a letter of release to all publication rights and royalties must accompany the design. The theme for this year’s fair is “All Roads Lead to the Fair.” The poster can follow the theme and include the theme name but is not required. Individuals may enter more than one design. Previous entries may be considered. Each entrant must sign a release of rights and royalties of publication. Entries will be released back to the artist after the 2022 Fair concludes. The poster will not be included in the 2022 fair catalog. Poster designs can be entered from now until Friday, July 29, at Hancock Whitney in Franklinton or Bogalusa during regular business hours. Foam party at Cassidy Park

Bogalusa Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission and Brilliant Mindz will present a “Foam Party” on Saturday, July 23, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the splash pad at Cassidy Park. This event is for ages 6-11.

‘Splatter Beat’ party at Cassidy Park

The Bogalusa Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission will host “Splatter Beat” on Saturday, July 23, from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. at the small stage at Cassidy Park. Wear white or neon that can be stained. This event is for youths ages 12-17. Dance and splatter to the beat of the DJ — there will be karaoke, as well.

Boo-galusa

The Bogalusa Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission will be presenting “Boogalusa” on Saturday, Oct. 29. More details will be released soon.
