BOUNTIFUL, Utah —  Authorities arrested a woman who worked at Bountiful care center for allegedly stealing $6,000 from a patient.

Police booked Amber E. Miller into the Davis County Jail on suspicion of intentional financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult; a second-degree felony.

According to a probable cause statement, a patient asked Miller, who was his recreational therapist, to cash a check and bring the money back to him at the South Davis Community Hospital. This request was made in March.

The patient tried to reach Miller multiple times through email to inquire about the money with no response. The patient then contacted police to report the suspected theft.

Miller initially told police that she delivered the money to the patient’s room in an envelope. Police advised the patient to have his room searched, but the money was not found.

The patient later contacted the police again to say Miller had admitted to the theft and had been fired from her job. Miller also returned the $6,000 to the patient.

The probable cause statement said Miller asked the patient not to pursue criminal charges after apologizing and returning the money, but the patient did not agree.

He noted that he had previously had $8,500 stolen from a safe in his room and said he suspected Miller of it based on her confession to the later theft. Miller denied being involved in the earlier theft.

Miller was booked into the county jail on Sunday.
