Boston Celtics: WEEI proposes Jaylen Brown for Kyrie Irving trade

If WEEI was running the Boston Celtics, very uncomfortable and unpopular decisions would be mulled about in the front office. At least that’s what the Houdini gleans from the trade proposal made on The Greg Hill Show that would send Jaylen Brown to the Brooklyn Nets and reunite Kyrie Irving with the Cs.

Irving, of course, had one of the most polarizing presences in Boston that the Cs have ever had. While the team won plenty of games during his time in green–even knocking off the Golden State Warriors by 33 points at the height of their dynasty in March 2019–Irving promised he’d be back ‘if Boston would have him’, then over-dribbled the Celtics out of the postseason against the Milwaukee Bucks, and put a bow on all of it by bolting for the Brooklyn Nets in the summer of 2019 after tampering with Spencer Dinwiddie (who actively recruited him while in a Cs uniform) as early as December 2018.

That he’d be suggested to return to Boston after everything he put the Nets through last season with his vaccine hesitancy costing him more than half the season is comical. At Jaylen Brown’s expense, after No. 7 helped carry the Cs to an Eastern Conference champions.

The Boston Celtics must never consider rostering Kyrie Irving again

Some teams, like the Los Angeles Lakers, could afford to explore adding Kyrie Irving on the cheap — a possibility still plausible this offseason since the Nets PG opted into his contract on the same day he told a reporter on the red carpet at the BET Awards to ‘ask his agent’ when asked if he still wanted to play for Brooklyn.

Brian Windhorst, while on the Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast, said that the Irving saga isn’t done yet:

"“I know that there are people in the league, and we’re not talking about ancillary people, we’re talking about high-ranking people, who believe that this is not done. I don’t know. Let me just say this about the Lakers. He obviously was very interested in joining the Lakers. The Lakers were very interested in having him.”"

Should Irving change his mind once more and demand a buyout, no team–at least one that doesn’t have LeBron on it to keep him in line–should consider adding him. Not long ago, this writer called adding Irving on the cheap, while trading for Kevin Durant, a dream scenario. This latest bout of ‘will he, won’t he’ that ended up with an opt-in has taken any positive potential away from that long-shot scenario.

Irving isn’t worth the Boston Celtics’ $6 million taxpayer’s MLE in free agency, so he surely isn’t worth giving up the team’s 1A superstar, Jaylen Brown, for. Durant is another story…
