The woman was struck just after 4:45 a.m. at the 200 block of South Jackson Avenue and Kammerer Avenue, according to a press release issued by the San Jose police. Initial reports incorrectly identified the pedestrian as a man.

The vehicle was identified as a black sedan, possibly a 2018-2022 Honda Accord. The driver was going northbound on South Jackson Avenue when they struck a woman crossing eastbound in the roadway, police said.

She was not in a marked crosswalk.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver fled the scene and remains unidentified.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the area was closed off to traffic. The roads were reopened just after 8:15 a.m. This marks the 33rd fatal traffic incident of this year, and the 21st pedestrian fatality, according to police.

This incident is being investigated as a felony hit and run.

The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office after confirming the victim's identity and notifying next of kin.
