Gainesville Police say a home invasion resulted in the father of the intended victim having a bullet sever his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.
Monday night Police say say Cedric Cohens went to an acquaintance's apartment at The Enclave, which is near Butler Plaza. Police say 20-year-oldCohens went to smoke, and as he was leaving Cohens let in a group of armed suspects.
One of them hit the victim in the back of the head with a handgun, then Police say Cohens and the other people dragged the victim into his bedroom, ordering him to hand over money.
Police say the group stole about $2,000 from the victim, while holding him at gunpoint. "A large amount of cannabis, white powder, and other drug paraphernalia," were also in the apartment, according to police.
The victim's father was asleep while this was happening, but woke up, and ran into his son's bedroom, according to an arrest report. Then, he was shot.
"One of the CO-DEFs shot VIC2 in the back. Per doctors at Shands, the bullet severed VIC2's spinal cord and he is expected to be paralyzed from the neck down," the arrest report says.
Police say the suspects ran from the apartment after the shooting.
Police say the victim identified Cohens from a photo lineup, and they are still working to identify the other suspects.
When they arrested Cohens, police say he first told them he was in Lake City, and then changed his story multiple times, ultimately saying he knew the victim had cash and drugs at his home. Police say Cohens said he relayed that information to the other suspects.
