Barbara Joy (Richter) Smiley, 73, of Walterboro, SC passed away peacefully at her home on June 19th, 2022 surrounded by family and under the care of Amedysis Hospice.
Born November 10, 1948, Barbara grew up in northeast Ohio and was a graduate of the class of 1966 at Chardon High School. She later settled in Walterboro, SC with her husband (Malcolm) where she made many, many friends.
Well traveled, Barbara loved visiting Europe with her husband. One of her most favorite places to spend time was Barcelona, Spain. When home, she enjoyed being active playing tennis, golf and pickle ball. She also enjoyed beating her nephews and great niece & nephew in a game of Scrabble or Aggravation.
An avid volunteer in the community, Barbara worked on both the Literacy Council and Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society. She was also a member of the Tea & Topics Club, Bay Blossoms Garden Club, as well as the Mayfield Garden Club. Of all these, her most cherished work was with the Friends of Colleton County Animal Shelter (FoCCAS) where she spent time as the Treasurer and was instrumental in creating the Spay and Neuter program in Colleton County.
Barbara is survived by her husband Malcolm Smiley and their beloved pup Thor; Donna Richter (aunt) and Karen Keifer-Boyd (cousin), and her nephew and his family Kenny, Natalie, Zoe, and Crosby Richter.
She was preceded in death by her parents Pauline and Glenn Richter and her brother Ken Richter & nephew Tommy Richter.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
