For 24 years, Rick Schmitt has looked over Sandwich School District 430 as its superintendent.

This is part of what he has observed now that he is retiring.

At his final Board of Education meeting, Schmitt humbly received the accolades of his peers.

She has been along Schmitt’s journey for 22 of his 24 years. 430 Board member Vicki Scharenberg described him.

Through those years that started as Sandwich High School assistant principal, Superintendent Schmitt has problem-solved through three key successful tax referendums, one to build a new middle school, the other to supply education funds, and another to keep buildings up to ever-changing life-safety standards. There were bus transportation issues, low teacher pay issues, and a world-wide Covid pandemic that changed the learning-teaching landscape.

So how did the superintendent work with disgruntled parents, students or staff?

Now Tom Sodaro will slide into the superintendent chair.  He has been principal at two schools from 4th to 12 and assistant superintendent for Sandwich.
