Miguel Yajure got a second chance to make a first impression with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The former New York Yankees prospect was called up Monday by the Pirates and got the start against the Washington Nationals.
Yajure was sharp, throwing four shutout innings before turning things over to Pittsburgh’s bullpen. He threw 65 pitches, 41 of which were strikes. But that wasn’t enough for the Pirates, who lost to the Nationals, 3-2.
It was Yajure’s first MLB start of the season. He made three starts for the Pirates last season.

The Pirates acquired Yajure from the Yankees before the 2021 season in the Jameson Taillon trade.
Yajure made his MLB debut with the Yankees in 2020, appearing in three games and posting a 1.29 ERA. In January of 2021, New York sent him, along with right-hander Roansy Contreras, infielder Maikol Escotto and outfielder Canaan Smith to the Pirates in exchange for Taillon.
Yajure made four appearances last season for the Pirates, posting an 8.40 ERA.
The bottom line hasn’t been much better this year, with Yajure sporting an 8.16 ERA in seven appearances. But the 24-year-old did pick up his first MLB victory in April, pitching two scoreless innings in a 9-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
