The Mitchell City Council approved the sale of the city-owned Kelley property at Lake Mitchell. Mitchell City Attorney Justin Johnson says the property will be sold for $1.59 million. The sale includes some additional land that has not been listed as surplus.
The city purchased 371 acres of land along with a home in 2019 for 4.1 million dollars in order to establish a wetland to reduce phosphorus flow into the lake. The property for sale included the house, a gated entrance, a pond, and several acres of land. It initially listed for $3.1 million and was recently listed at $2.2 million.
Eleven acres of the land were parceled out with the house and a shed. 186 acres to the north are being used a farmland. The remaining 174 acres are the creek bottom.
The farmland will continue to be leased for the time being. The proceeds from the sale of the Kelley property will go to the improvement of Lake Mitchell.
