Off-duty corrections officer shoots armed carjacker on Roosevelt Boulevard, police say

Police found the stolen car with bullet holes, blood in it

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police are investigating the carjacking of an off-duty corrections officer Monday night in Feltonville.

It happened around 11 p.m. on Roosevelt Boulevard, close to Rising Sun Avenue.

Police said the corrections officer was leaving a friend’s house when he was approached by an armed 21-year-old man, who quickly pulled the officer out of his car. The officer then got his gun out and fired at his attacker, who briefly got away, according to investigators.

“He fired five shots toward the perpetrator and his vehicle that was just carjacked,” added Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The alleged carjacker drove off, but within a half-hour, police found the Toyota Avalon about a half-mile away on Bingham Street.

“That vehicle was found with five bullet holes in it,” Small said, “and also a lot of fresh blood inside the driver’s seat and some on the center console.”

Shortly after the car was discovered, police learned that a man, believed to be the carjacker, somehow ended up at the hospital for treatment. He had been wounded on both sides of his body.

The corrections officer was not hurt.

Police are looking through surveillance footage from the area as they continue to investigate the incident.
