Richland County's COVID new cases flat; Ohio cases holding steady

Ohio reported 16,159 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, from 16,169 the week before of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Ohio ranked 41st among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 1.2% from the week before, with 721,538 cases reported. With 3.51% of the country's population, Ohio had 2.24% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 24 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Ohio has planned not to publish deaths between June 2 and June 22. This will skew totals and week-to-week comparisons.

Richland County reported 132 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 128 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 32,716 cases and 513 deaths.

Crawford County reported 52 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 47 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 11,607 cases and 216 deaths.

Within Ohio, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Gallia County with 254 cases per 100,000 per week; Lawrence County with 244; and Athens County with 237. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Franklin County, with 2,055 cases; Cuyahoga County, with 1,603 cases; and Hamilton County, with 1,331. Weekly case counts rose in 47 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Montgomery, Butler and Warren counties.

Across Ohio, cases fell in 38 counties, with the best declines in Lucas County, with 436 cases from 606 a week earlier; in Athens County, with 155 cases from 304; and in Summit County, with 627 cases from 710.

In Ohio, 121 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, zero people were reported dead.

A total of 2,831,228 people in Ohio have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 38,778 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 86,967,639 people have tested positive and 1,015,938 people have died.

Hospitals in 34 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 25 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 39 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
