A hit-and-run crash on I-81 in Roanoke Tuesday morning left a VDOT contractor dead.
The incident, involving a tractor-trailer, left traffic backed up on I-81 at mile marker 142.6, which runs along Loch Haven Drive around 2:40 a.m.
Virginia State Police say Matthew C. Frazier, 54, of Clifton Forge, was exiting a piece of construction equipment that was being loaded on a lowboy trailer when he was struck by the semi-truck.
Family members of Frazier are left with the question, "why did the driver not stop?".
One family member said that Frazier was a good man who loved his children and grandchildren so much.
They said he was always willing to help someone in need and will be missed deeply.
The truck was northbound on I-81 when it hit the man. Northbound lanes were closed to traffic. Drivers queued up behind the scene for about a half-mile.
Troopers are working to identify the tractor-trailer from videos obtained from the scene. This investigation remains ongoing.
