A place where you'd think it would be safe to store your personal belongings is now a victim to a series of crimes in Yukon. Fox 25 received four police reports from the Oklahoma City Police Department, which has a jurisdiction in Yukon. Three of those four reports were break-ins at a storage unit location on North Sara Road.
Fox 25 spoke with Cheyenne Mock, who had her storage unit broken into at that location on June 23. She had two locks on her garage, and both of them were cut off.
"We were all asleep and our phones started going off because there was motion detected inside my storage unit," Mock said. "We pulled up the pictures to check. We saw two individuals had my door opened and were inside my unit. We immediately got on the phone with 911. We got into our vehicles, and we started making our way up here. I was so mad. I was shaking like the whole entire time. It was horrible."
Mock's father James Hines was there to help his daughter.
"It was just an adrenaline rush," Hines said. "We wanted to get there before they got all of her stuff."
This wasn't Mock's first time dealing with a break-in though. Her unit had just been broken into on June 11.
"It had happened to so many people already," Mock said. "[Law enforcement] couldn't do anything about it because they didn't have enough proof."
Mock installed a camera inside her unit, which helped authorities identify two suspects: Stuart Carr and Ashley Faulkner. She tells Fox 25 those are the same people she caught trying to steal her stuff three weeks ago.
"When they were like, 'They're in the unit! I was like, 'There's no way. Are you serious? They broke in the first time and we really didn't think it would happen a second time but I definitely wanted to be cautious. That's why I got the camera. I was like, 'I got them! Finally."
In the future, Mock says she plans to keep her camera there and install it in any other future unit that she uses.
"I will also drive past my unit more often just to see how much activity is going on around here."
Mock didn't lose any valuables. Besides having a camera, Oklahoma City Police Sgt. Dillon Quirk says there are other ways to make sure your personal belongings are safe.
"We know that you utilize these storage units to keep your things, but the less valuables of extreme valuables that you can keep out of there the better," Sgt. Quirk said. "It's also a good idea to know your serial numbers, check your unit regularly and as always make a police report."
