The Town of Chapel Hill is planning its annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration at Southern Community Park, according to its website.

The Community Arts and Culture department said “an evening of community camaraderie” will begin at the park at 7 p.m., with a fireworks show planned for 9 p.m.

The town’s release for the event says residents should find seating at the Southern Community Park ball fields and the Southern Village Green for some of the best views of the fireworks show. Attendees can bring blankets, chairs and food for a picnic. Chapel Hill said, however, that tents and tailgates will not be allowed, nor will pets, alcoholic beverages and glass.

Limited parking is available at the park itself, and the town is recommending attendees to park for free at the Jackson Deck next to UNC Hospital — something not offered before on the holiday. The Southern Community Park and Southern Village Park and Ride Lot will be closed at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 4, but will reopen at 7 p.m. that evening.

Chapel Hill Transit will not be running that day due to the holiday, but a shuttle service to and from Jackson Deck and Southern Village will be available. The shuttle will run for 30 minutes following the end of the show, but will not run during the show itself. Parking will not be available at nearby Mary Scroggs Elementary School, and its grounds will be closed to all non-fire department personnel.

In addition, Carrboro will continue its traditional yearly reading of Frederick Douglass’ famous essay, “The Meaning of the Fourth of July for the Negro” on July 4. The reading will occur from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Carrboro Century Center on North Greensboro Street. North Carolina Central professor Irving Joyner will provide introductory remarks.

Other Carrboro town activities include the People’s Parade, beginning at Weaver Street Market at 10:50 a.m. The parade will move to the Main Event at Carrboro Town Commons. Live music will also be performed at Town Hall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Several other Town of Chapel Hill services will not be operating on Monday, July 4. Residential trash, curbside recycling and commercial trash will not be collected (yard waste collection is unaffected). The Orange County landfill and other county waste centers will be closed.

The Chapel Hill Public Library will also be closed, as will housing and maintenance offices. While public parks, greenways and playground will remain open, the Parks and Recreation department’s offices and indoor facilities, such as the Chapel Hill Community Center Pool, will be closed.
