Officials in Butte County are warning that Monday June 27th they detected an invasive species of mosquito commonly known as yellow fever mosquito.
The Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District sent out a letter stating that the case was found in East Oroville near Oroville Dam Boulevard and Olive Highway.
They say it was the first detection this year of the specifies in Butte County and third consecutive year it has been detected in Oroville.
Officials warn that the mosquito has the potential to transmit viruses like Chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever and Zika.
The most effective way to prevent contact with yellow fever mosquitoes – and all other mosquito species – is to eliminate areas of standing water around the home. Pay attention to water that may collect in baby pools, flowerpots, birdbaths and grill covers. Those who spend time outdoors should wear long pants and sleeves, and apply an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon-eucalyptus. Homeowners should also screen all windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from flying inside.
The District states that they will use surveillance and control which includes door-to-door inspections, as well as adult surveillance and control. They will do ultra-low spraying, barrier treatments and a variety of live mosquito trapping.
