On Sunday, a massive brawl broke out in the second inning of the Los Angeles Angels–Seattle Mariners game. Things turned south toward the end of Saturday’s game when Mike Trout was nearly hit in the head with a fastball. Then at the beginning of Sunday’s game, Angels pitcher Andrew Wantz threw at the head of Julio Rodríguez. Then after hitting Jesse Winker, the benches and bullpens cleared.
Major League Baseball was quick to lay the hammer and punished a total of 12 people for their roles in the brawl. Phil Nevin got the stiffest penalty as he was given a 10-game suspension.
Most people noticed that Angels interpreter Manny Del Campo got a two-game suspension for his actions. It’s not every day that an interpreter gets suspended and there were a bunch of reactions as a result.
Lots to chew on here. Seems clear @MLB is blaming Angels manager Phil Nevin for inciting the brawl. My guess is Winker is paying a stiff price for his double-bird salute to the fans. Have never heard of an interpreter getting suspended for brawling. https://t.co/RdciFlD3sA
