The New York Yankees hosted the Oakland Athletics on Monday evening in the first game of a three-game series in the Bronx.
Coming off a series split against the Houston Astros, including two walk-off wins courtesy of Aaron Judge, a lighter portion of this schedule has arrived.
Oakland entered the game with 25 wins compared to 54 from the Bombers, meaning the home team featured a sizable advantage.
Starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery struggled significantly early in the contest, giving up six hits and five earned runs over 6.2 innings. Montgomery tossed 65 strikes over 97 pitches, striking out six batters. The Yankees’ rotation has struggled in recent days, forcing the offense to pick up the slack.
Thankfully, the Yankees’ batters came to play on Monday night, posting nine runs on eight hits and six walks. Down 5–1 in the bottom of the 4th inning, Giancarlo Stanton launched a home run to left field, traveling 409 feet. However, the Yankees completely took over in the bottom of the 7th inning, when Oakland catcher Sean Murphy was hit with two interferences, one with the bases loaded, driving in a run.
Shortly after, third baseman Josh Donaldson double to left field, driving in Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo. Treviño followed up with a double of his own to left, driving in Donaldson and Stanton. To finish off an electric 7th-inning, Marwin Gonzalez slapped a single to right field, bringing in the final runner in scoring position.
Catapulting themselves to a 9–5 lead, the Yankees handed the ball over to Albert Abreu, who struck out four batters over 35 pitches and 2.1 innings. He walked just one but showcased why the Bombers immediately picked him up after the Kansas City Royals designated him for assignment.
General manager Brian Cashman traded Abreu and fellow prospect Robby Ahlstrom to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Treviño this past off-season. Now, the Yankees have both the flame-throwing relief pitcher and Treviño on the roster, both of whom made a sizable impact in the win.
The Yankees will feature JP Sears on the mound against Oakland on Tuesday with Frankie Montas on the opposite side. Cashman has reportedly been eyeing a potential trade for a starting pitcher, with Cincinnati star Luis Castillo and Montas included in the conversation. The Yankees’ GM will get a firsthand look at Montas on Tuesday, who currently hosts a 3.21 ERA with 92 strikeouts over 89.2 innings this season.
