A North Wilkesboro man was killed and another injured in a midnight crash on June 25 on Cherry Street in Downtown North Wilkesboro.

Anthony Resendiz Gregorio, 25, of Cricket Drive, North Wilkesboro, the driver  of a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt, was killed in the accident, according to North Wilkesboro Police Patrol Division Captain Brad Mathis. He added that Gregorio died at the scene.

Giovanni Olvera Cervantes, 26, of Stephanie Drive, North Wilkesboro, a passenger in the vehicle, was injured but treated at the scene, Mathis said.

Speed is listed as a contributing factor to the accident, Mathis said. The posted speed limit in that location is 35 mph. It was estimated that the speed at impact was 55 mph, according to the accident report.

"It looks like he might have been going 70 mph before the crash," Mathis said, as he read from the report in an interview with The Wilkes Record.

Gregorio and Cervantes were both wearing seat belts, Mathis said, adding that the car's airbags had also deployed.

In a press release sent to The Wilkes Record, Mathis stated: “On Saturday, June 25th at 12:04 am (just after midnight Friday night) a single vehicle crash occurred on Cherry Street that resulted in the driver’s death.”

The accident occurred across the street from the Wilkes County Schools’ offices.

Mathis stated the driver lost control of the car in a curve and ran off the road to the left, striking a utility pole before coming to a stop.

North Wilkesboro Fire Department and Wilkes EMS were on the scene along with the North Wilkesboro Police Department and Wilkesboro Police Department traffic accident reconstruction team.

Mathis stated that the crash investigation is continuing.
