A 29-year-old man was arraigned Monday on charges of attempted murder and assault in the random beating of two elderly men in downtown Portland over the weekend.
Police arrested Keffer White Saturday near Southwest 5th Avenue and Hall Street.
An 82-year-old man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. An 88-year-old man also went to the hospital, seriously hurt, but was expected to survive.
According to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, White said he was going to kill the men.
Prosecutors allege White made fun of a group for being elderly and then attacked the two men.
The DA’s office said White’s being held without bail.
White had been put on post-prison supervision in a strangulation case and on misdemeanor probation for punching a police officer in the head. His supervision was out of Washington County because of his address. He also has an open case from January in Multnomah County.
The assistant director of Washington County Community Corrections said White's "been mostly out of compliance [with probation] since the January incident." In fact, he had a warrant for defying supervision just 11 days before the attack on the two men in Portland.
According to court records, White skipped at least four court dates in the January case.
