Sadieville implements city-wide curfew to keep teens out of trouble

SADIEVILLE, Ky. (FOX 56) – The Sadieville City Commission voted Monday to approve a new city-wide curfew for persons under the age of 18.

Before this meeting, kids in town were required to be off the streets by 9:30 p.m. during the week and by 10 p.m. on the weekends. During the summer, the kids were given an extra hour of play.

Sadieville’s police chief, Bobby Bruner, said the curfew is not always a priority because a lot of kids living in town comes in spurts.

Chief Bruner said, “I have been up here since 2005. The first four to five years I was here we had an abundance of kids and we had to basically do the same thing back then, but those kids grew up. So now we’re back in that cycle again.”

With Monday’s vote, the city has now approved a uniform curfew that runs from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and on Fridays and Saturdays that time is pushed back to 10 p.m. It’s a move city officials said was needed after two teens were arrested for arson last month.

Bruner continued, “A lot of kids that are under the age of 18 are causing a lot of vandalism and there’s not a lot to do up here. The park closes at dusk.”

The updated ordinance also clarifies who is allowed to supervise a teen under the age of 18 caught out after curfew, specifically stating a parent or guardian has to be present.

This ordinance also clarifies the enforcement component of the curfew. For a first offense, a child will be taken to the police department where the parents will receive a warning. After that the parent will be cited each time, their child is caught out after curfew.
