A Conestoga Valley High School student died in a car crash and his teammate died in a related incident, according to the Lancaster coroner’s office.
The crash occurred early Saturday in the 500 block of East Willow Road, East Lampeter Township, Chief Deputy Coroner Eric Bieber said Monday. The crash site is about 1.5 miles from the high school.
A 16-year-old died shortly after 2 a.m. from the single-vehicle crash, Bieber said. The cause of death was mechanical asphyxia due to multiple traumatic injuries, according to the coroner’s office. The office does not release the names of juveniles, Bieber said, but a fundraising page for funeral expenses has identified the boy as Tyreese Smith.
Conestoga Valley School District announced the death of two high school football players on Sunday. The school’s athletic director Dina Henry told Lancaster Online Sunday night that Smith died in the crash but she was unaware of the circumstances of the second student’s death.
“My understanding is their deaths occurred under different circumstances, several hours apart,” she told the newspaper. “It’s been a very confusing 24 hours, trying to make sense of this. The grief, the sense of dread, when two young kids are gone. It’s so sad. It’s hard to even wrap your head around it.
Bieber said the other boy died in a separate incident related to the crash.
The East Lampeter Township Police Department is investigating the crash but has not released any information as of Monday evening.
A woman who said her son attended Conestoga Valley posted a photo on her Facebook page of a memorial marked with a large red cross with the names and jersey numbers of both teens who died.
