CLOVER, S.C. — A suspect has been arrested after a body was found behind a gas station on Charlotte Highway in York County, according to the sheriff’s office.
David Lynn Amos, 52, a man who is homeless living in the Clover area, was taken into custody on June 28 on murder charges, the York County Sheriff’s Office said.
“He was off,” said store manager Matt Mugavero. “He was strange.”
The sheriff’s office released surveillance photos of Amos taken on June 25 at the gas station. Amos was seen with Hargett prior to his death, deputies said.

Deputies said Amos was involved in the death of Johnathan Lancer Hargett, 43, a resident of Lake Wylie. Hargett was found in the woods behind a Times Turnaround BP gas station on SC Highway 49 in the Clover-Lake Wylie area. Hargett was found on June 27 by a person at the gas station, deputies said.
Mugavero said Amos went into his liquor store to try and buy something.
“He was gonna buy some bourbon over there and then he bounced a credit card,” Mugavero said. “He came back a few minutes later. We noticed his hand was messed up, so we gave him some first-aid Band-Aids to fix it up. He kept on saying he was going to Florida. He was trying to get to (Interstate 77).”
Amos was found about 48 hours later and arrested at a Love’s Truck Stop off Interstate 77 in Fort Mill, South Carolina, the sheriff’s office said.
Police have not released a motive behind the crime.
The sheriff’s office said the death investigation is not connected to a search for Johnathan Michael Shorts. Deputies said they were looking for Shorts along Kings Drive on June 27.
