Flight cancellations piling up at Des Moines International Airport and across the country
If you walked through the Des Moines International Airport on Monday, you would see people looking up at flight times, realizing their trip and many others are running behind.
"It's frustrating, but it is what it is," said Chanda Long, waiting on her flight to Florida.
Roberto Uribe is one of the lucky ones. His flights are all on time as he travels to Texas. He was in Des Moines for a tournament. He says any delay or cancellation could've ruined his trip.
"We would've missed our Airbnb, we would've missed check-in, even signing up for the tournament... everything," Uribe said.
Kayla Kovarna with the Des Moines International Airport says more and more people are coming through the airport every single day.
Cancellations are up slightly at the Des Moines International Airport this month.
In June of last year, there were 25 cancelations. There are 29 so far this June, but the problem is worse at larger airports. They're seeing more cancelations for a number of reasons.
"When you're connecting there are more chances for a cancellation in your journey," Kovarna said. "It's due to staffing and weather. There's always a risk for cancellation and passengers should just be prepared."
Kovarna said to make sure you have the app of the airline you're flying for quick updates.
If your flight is canceled, stay calm and check with the gate agent for possible solutions.
In some cases, they may give you money for food, or even a hotel to stay in.
According to FlightAware, at 4:37 p.m. on Monday, more than 4,700 flights within, into or out of the United States were delayed. Over 800 were canceled.
