CHEBOYGAN COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Cheboygan City Council is looking at two options to change water and sewer rates within the city.
The city is hoping that making these changes would keep the city in line with some EGLE guidelines that require proof they’re bringing in enough money to cover expenses.
Staff with the city of Cheboygan say many of the water meters in the city are out of date.
As meters get older, they don't read correctly which leads to customers being undercharged.
While that may be good for the consumer, if the city does nothing about it, eventually it could lead to issues with funding future infrastructure projects.
The city is planning to put a mandatory meter replacement program in place to fix the aging issues.
They’ll also consider raising water and sewer rates.
One option is to have this change happen all at once, which would increase residents’ monthly bills by about $23.
The second plan would be to implement changes over two years.
The first year would cost residents around $14 a month, then another $9 in year two.
This issue is on the agenda for Tuesday night’s city council meeting, which takes place at 7 p.m. at the Cheboygan City Hall.
