A rally initiative in Northern New York took place Monday afternoon following last week's Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a ruling that will ultimately allow individual states to decide whether or not they will legalize abortion.
Protest rallies took place in Plattsburgh, Saranac Lake, Canton and Watertown, New York. Even though abortion is legal in New York under the Reproductive Health Act, the CEO of North Country Planned Parenthood says the right to an abortion is not promised indefinitely.
Champlain Valley Right for Life is looking at this time as an opportunity to bring to light some of the other options that are available for pregnant people which do not include abortion.
Nancy Belcile, president of Champlain Valley Right to Life, says services include free ultrasounds and counseling for pregnant women. Some local pregnancy centers will also provide an abortion pill reversal.
Planned Parenthood of Northern New York says its going to continue holding rallies like the one held in Trinity Park on Monday until reproductive rights are given back to people across the country.
“We are not happy. This was a devastating decision for women," said Tess Barker, CEO of Northern New York Planned Parenthood. "We want our legislators to hear that. We want the community to know that making abortion illegal does not make it go away. It makes it more dangerous and deadly. And we’re going to do everything we can to get our lives back.”
