84-year-old man David Matthews drowns at Lynn beach after being pulled, unconscious from water by bystanders

An 84-year-old man has died after bystanders who saw him drowning pulled him, unconscious, from the water at King’s Beach in Lynn, state police said.

Police identified the victim as David Matthews of Lynn.

Two bystanders called 911 after they saw the man start to drown around 3 p.m. and tried to rescue him, officials said.

By the time bystanders pulled Matthews out of the water he was unconscious, Lynn Fire District Chief Joseph Zukas told The Daily Item.

Lynn police, fire, EMS and Massachusetts state troopers responded to the beach off of Lynn Shore Drive, Lt. Paul Sullivan of the Massachusetts State Police told Masslive.

Initially, the bystanders were conducting CPR on Matthews, but as soon as the Lynn fire department arrived at the scene they took over, Zukas told Masslive.

Currently, there are no lifeguards on the Lynn shore of King’s beach, Zukas said.

Matthews was then rushed to Salem Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, State Police spokesman David Procopio said.

The Essex County District Attorney’s Office is investigating.

Recent weeks have seen several drownings at beaches, ponds and rivers across Massachusetts. A 6-year-old boy was swept away by the Merrimack River and drowned on June 9, while the boy’s mother died attempting to save her son. An 18-year-old recent graduate of Everett High School drowned after jumping into a Gloucester last Wednesday. Multiple drowning incidents have also occurred on Worcester’s Lake Quinsigamond.
