Emergency personnel respond to a crash involving 9 vehicles on John Sevier Highway on June 27, 2022

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Multiple people have been taken to the hospital after a crash on Monday along John Sevier Highway in Knox County. One of those victims had life-threatening injuries, according to the Knoxville Police Department, and further updates state the Tennessee Highway Patrol will be inspecting the involved dump truck in the crash.

KPD spokesman Scott Erland shared in an update Tuesday morning that around 3:20 p.m. Monday, KPD officers responded to the crash with multiple injuries reported along John Sevier Highway near Mountain Grove Drive. The crash involved nine vehicles: a dump truck, three passenger vehicles and five motorcycles.

Erland said numerous people who had been riding motorcycles were transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for injuries, including one woman whose injuries are considered life-threatening. She remains hospitalized. The driver of one of the involved passenger vehicles was also taken to the hospital in a private vehicle for treatment for injuries.

According to Erland, the initial crash investigation revealed that the dump truck attempted to slow for stopped traffic but was unable to stop before colliding with the other vehicles. KPD Crash Reconstruction personnel are continuing their investigation with the assistance of THP, whose investigators will conduct an inspection of the dump truck today.

The crash was reported around 4 p.m. and the roadway remained closed for around four hours. It was initially believed to have involved four passenger vehicles, TDOT Spokesperson Mark Nagi had said Monday.

Nagi said all lanes were back open at 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Friends of Blair Howard say she sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash and they have organized a GoFundMe to help cover Howard’s expenses while she recovers.
