New York State Police responded to a call about a child being struck by a vehicle the morning of Monday, June 27, at a residence on Bull Road in the Town of Schyuler.
According to State Police, the mother and the victim, her 18-month-old daughter, arrived home from grocery shopping. As the mother, whose name was not given, carried the groceries into the home, the daughter was playing on an outdoor playset. After the groceries were taken inside, the mother began to pull her SUV forward to park it when the child ran in front of the vehicle.
As the mother drove forward and after she felt and heard the impact of driving over her child, she immediately stopped the car and ran to her unresponsive daughter lying in the driveway. She brought her daughter into the house and began rendering aid while calling 911.
The 18-month-old victim was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Utica, where she was pronounced dead.
The investigation is ongoing, police say, and no charges are expected against the driver, the child's mother.
